tune of $1.5 billion. nbc's kristen dahlgren has more. >> reporter: from the moment doors opened thursday before the thanksgiving dishes were even done, almost a quarter billion shoppers will have been online or in stores. >> i just prepare, put my sneakers on and go for it. >> reporter: shopping started earlier than ever. and in spite of those employee protests, the early opening paid off. according to the national retail federation, more than 35 million shopped on thanksgiving. 6 million more than last year. black friday was big, too. 89 million braved the crowds in search of those hard-to-beat bargains. up from 86 million last year. >> the biggest wish list is? >> uggs. >> uggs. >> reporter: and americans spent more, too. the average shopper spent $423 this weekend, up from $398 last year for a total of $59.1 billion. it's not just the stores seeing the boom. for the first time, online

spending topped $1 billion on black friday, well before so-called cyber monday, also expected to break records. >> great for me, don't have to get off the couch, right? we don't have to go anywhere. so easier shopping. >> reporter: but while shoppers were out in force this holiday weekend, not everyone is spending freely. between now and christmas, many shoppers report they'll be more cautious, concerned about the economy and the gridlock in congress over the fiscal cliff. >> they're going to be pulling back a little because they don't know what to expect for 2013, and they want to remain cautious as we move forward into the next year. >> that was kristen dahlgren reporting. speaking of, congress returns from the holiday this week, still facing that so-called fiscal cliff. if a deal can't be reached by january 1st, americans would face half a trillion dollars more in taxes next year, coupled with $100 billion in cuts to domestic and defense spending. now, since the reagan era, most republicans have pledged not to raise taxes. as mike viqueira reports, there are signs of flexibility on both

sides of the aisle. >> reporter: it's a pledge almost all republicans have signed. to oppose tax increases of any kind. that once solid wall was showing crass. >> the pledge you signed 20 years ago, 18 years ago is for that congress. the world has changed, and the economic situation is different. >> reporter: but republicans insist in return for defying party doctrine, democrats must agree that changes in social security and medicare. >> i will violate the pledge, long story short, for the good of the country only if democrats will do entitlement reform. >> reporter: activists on the left are lining up to oppose those reforms, but the president has put them on the table before. during last year's failed talks on a grand bargain and more recently in his first post-election press conference. >> we have to continue to take a serious look at how we reform our entitlements because health care costs continue to be the biggest driver of our deficits. >> reporter: mr. obama has insisted that in any deal, tax rates on the wealthy must rise. but a top democrat signaled

openness to the republican stance. revenue can be raised by closing loopholes and limiting deductions. >> they have to go up either real tax rates or effective tax rates. there's ways of doing that. >> reporter: with the clock ticking and markets getting nervous, talks begin again this week amid tentative steps toward common ground. >> we can't go off the fiscal cliff. we have to show the world we're adults. the election is over. >> nbc's mike viqueira reporting. overseas to egypt where the country's newly elected leader has granted himself unchecked power sparking days of clashes and sending the country's stock market into a freefall. our reporter is in cairo with the very latest. ayman, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. egypt's stock market opened for a second straight day, and it plunged already by 4%. now, that's already a day after it lost 10%, and officials there had to stop trading just to prevent it from declining any further. that's the economic turmoil this country finds itself in. there are tons of other

political and social unrest unfolding across the egyptian capital, cairo. a short while from now, mourners are going to be praying for one of the victims, and they'll be burying him as well as another one that died in clashes overnight. as a result, egypt's president says he's going to hold meetings today with some of the country's top officials, including the judges who, over the past few days, have called for nationwide strikes. right now they and several other important unions including journalists and revolutionary group movements have been angered by the president's decision to assume more power including legislative powers and the ability for him to not be under any type of judicial review of any of the decisions he makes. egypt waking up to another day of political turmoil. lynn? >> ayman, thanks so much. well, a tense but much calmer scene along the israeli/gaza border as a cease-fire continues to survive. hamas claims the damage to gaza tops well over $1 billion. this weekend israeli soldiers and palestinian police stood on

opposite sides of the fence keeping the peace. an islamic cleric called it a sin to break the truce. mahmoud abbas is heading to the united nations in hopes of achieving a lower level statehood status for his people. rebels are claiming an important victory saying they now hold one military base in syria. amateur video posted on a social media website showed rpgs being fired during an overnight battle as opposition fighters captured a helicopter base which is near the capital of damascus. and the government bombing of a village near the capital reportedly killed at least eight children. they were just outside playing at the time. just horrible. now for a look at your national weather, let's turn to nbc meteorologist bill karins. he is tracking that weather channel forecast with new video you just got in. >> yeah, there wasn't a lot of bad stuff over the weekend, but this video was found from hurricane sandy. we don't have a lot of pictures of what it looked like on the

coastline of new jersey as we approached high tide that monday evening. you can see the water already over the seawall. this is probably three hours before the actual high tide. these waves were just crashing into the seawall. and with the high tide, those were crashing into those homes and just taking the homes out. it was obviously dramatic video, and it looks like this 15-year-old boy was safe after all of this. look at that. looks like just something you'd see somewhere in newfoundland. let's show you what's happening as far as today. this morning on this monday, i hope everyone had a wonderful holiday weekend. very cold conditions have invaded the country. everywhere in blue has a windchill of 40 degrees or lower. it's very cold in the northern plains. north dakota, minnesota, windchills in the negative numbers. 19 in chicago. and it's blustery and cold from boston through new england. of course, this time of year when you get that cold air, you're going to get the lake-effect snow. we've had it all weekend long on and off. we're getting heavy lake effect now trying to shift down towards oswego, new york and trying to sink into the syracuse area.

just be careful driving on the throughway and also northern portions interstate 81. late today as we get moisture returning from the gulf, a little bit of warmer air. we may get a few strong thunderstorms here in northern louisiana down through areas of east texas. just north of houston. the threat of large hail and a little buiit of wind damage. at least one nice day today in the southeast. a little chilly in the northeast. lynn, it looks like that storm that's going to affect areas of the deep south could bring a little bit of rain and snow to some areas of the northeast throughout your tuesday. i'll tell you who can expect a little bit of snowfall a little later. >> bill, thanks so much. well, evidence overlooked in the casey anthony murder trial. and an alleged shoplifter dies in the hands of walmart workers. tumbling into the record books. she looks like she is. you're watching "first look" on msnbc. some stories making news this morning, at least 112 people were killed when a garment factory in bangladesh caught fire and burned for over

14 hours. more than 100 workers were injured in the fire, but the cause is not yet known. in springfield, massachusetts, fire officials say human error caused the massive explosion in the city's entertainment district friday that injured 21 people and destroyed one building. a gas company worker looking for a leak punctured a hole in a gas line. at a walmart east of atlanta, georgia, a man suspected of shoplifting died yesterday. police say the man was in a physical altercation in the parking lot with two walmart associates who have been suspended, and a contract security officer who was let go. a walmart statement said, quote, no amount of merchandise is worth someone's life. this is truly a sad situation. we're in the process of working with law enforcement. next, authorities in florida confirmed that they missed evidence that someone in casey anthony's house did a computer search for the term "foolproof suffocation" on the day her daughter died. casey anthony was acquitted of murder. the u.s. supreme court will consider a challenge this week

to the defense of marriage act. the law was passed in 1996 and bars federal benefits to same-sex couples. and the powerball jackpot for wednesday has grown to a record $425 million. and based on sales in 42 states, the total jackpot could go a lot higher. now here's your first look at this morning's dish of "scrambled politics." who's afraid of going off the fiscal cliff? well, not anti-tax crusader grover norquist who tells "the wall street journal" he thinks republicans will hold the line on taxes. and if there's no deal, norquist isn't worried, telling "the journal," the woerld won't come to an end if this isn't resolved before january. meanwhile, in "the new york times," warren buffett takes a dig at norquist and others while making his case for a minimum tax on the wealthy. the oracle of omaha writes, "let's forget about the rich and the ultrarich going on strike and stuffing their ample funds under their mattresses if -- gasp -- capital gains rates and

ordinary income rates are increased." after weeks of criticism over u.n. ambassador susan rice, senator john mccain who vowed to block her potential nomination as secretary of state appears to be backing off that threat. >> she could conceivably get your vote for secretary of state? >> i think she deserves the ability and the opportunity to explain herself and her position, just as she said. actor ben affleck has long been involved in efforts to help the victims of war-torn eastern congo. on sunday he talked about his call for the u.s. to take a more active role. >> i think our actions in foreign policy, and maybe i'm naive, represent our values and represent who we are. and if any american were to go to that country and stand and see what was happening there, they would insist that we do what we could. more than ten years after she was kidnapped as a teenager, elizabeth smart is finally ready to tell her own story in a new book. and the author is chris stewart who was just elected to congress from utah. he tells "the salt lake tribune"

[ male announcer ] now all you need is a magic carriage. citi price rewind. buy now. save later. here's your first look at some of the other news going on around america today. we're going to begin in new orleans where a fire that torched an entire city block left five families homeless. there were 100 firefighters battling this raging six-alarm inferno over an hour before gaining control. in all, the blaze destroyed five buildings and left several other structures severely damaged. next in michigan where a police dash cam captured a roadside explosion. the couple inside the minivan blaze escaped unharmed, but they had some explaining to do. police believe the blaze has the markings of a meth lab fire. the vehicle is now being checked for components used to cook methamphetamines. motorists in oregon had to deal with a different kind of

danger. on that roadway. a driver was left dangling for over an hour after crashing through a guardrail on an overpass. he hung upside down while firefighters secured his truck to a fire truck. the driver was later arrested for dui. finally, a former cheerleader flipped out in a major way at her alma mater. over 20,000 people at the university of texas at el paso cheered as u.s. army lieutenant walker performed 49 consecutive back handsprings during halftime at the school's football game. we sped that up just a tad for effect. guinness world record officials will view the tape to determine if walker broke the current record of 35. how about a little sports. "sunday night football," giants/packers. new york's eli manning threw for three touchdown passes, reaching 200 for his career as new york routed green bay, 38-10. in miami, the dolphins got a little wet as -- oops -- the field's sprinklers turned on

during the third quarter. that's a little messy. later, miami tied the game on a 29-yard touchdown pass. and as the time ran down, a dolphins' field goal beat seattle, 24-21. in other action, peyton manning of the broncos moved up to second place all time with 14 seasons of 3,000 yards passing or more. beating kansas city 17-9. and comeback kid matt ryan of the falcons notched his 21st career game-winning drive in the fourth quarter. that's edging tampa bay, 24-23. and in college football after beating usc, notre dame stays number one and will play in the national league championship game january 7th. they're going to face either number two, alabama, or number three, georgia, who play for s.e.c. championship saturday. florida and oregon round out the top five. and talk about some good school spirit here. indianapolis cheerleaders shaved their heads during the colts/bills game in solidarity with head coach chuck pagano who is battling leukemia.

overall, the colts have raised more than a quarter of a million dollars for leukemia research. and some tragic news for the family of houston rockets' coach kevin mchale who was a hall of fame player for the celtics. his 23-year-old daughter has died after a battle with the autoimmune disease lupus. now let's get a check once again of your weather with nbc meteorologist bill karins. he has that weather channel forecast which is a cold one, bill. >> yeah, it's a little shock. our bodies have to get used to it. it's the first settled-in cold period that we've established here in areas of the east, especially in new england. windchills are in the 20s as far south as washington, d.c. pretty much areawide from the great lakes to new england, we're in the 20s. and the windchill today, there will be sunshine out there. we'll get back up into the 40s. very much like what you saw on saturday and sunday. if you're in the shade, definitely colder, in the sun it feels all right. here's where it gets interesting is on tuesday. light rain for d.c., but we
